Beatle Art Display Set For Detroit

Curiosity seeking crowds are not what the London Art Gallery hopes to attract with its showing of a collection of etchings by Beatle John Lennon, according to Eugene Schuster, head of London Arts, Inc.

“But when art and sex are put together, it’s hard to keep the crowds away.” Schuster said Monday.

A showing of 300 lithographs of 14 etchings depicting Lennon and his wife, Yoko Ono, on their honeymoon, opens here Wednesday. When the show opened last week in London, eight of the 14 etchings were banned as pornography.

Schuster who was arrested in London on an obscure charge of displaying pornography near a pathway, said he is taking several precautions to ensure that the show will go on here for this first public U.S. showing.

No minors will be allowed, a guard will be posted at the door, and all glass windows and doors will be covered, Schuster said.

He said he wants those truly interested in art to be able to view the collection although he realizes it will be difficult to keep away the crowds.

The Lithographs have been approved by U.S. Customs, Schuster said.  And they are on their way to Detroit.
